What is a Steam Trap?
|
|
A steam trap is an automatic valve
used to remove CO2, air, condensate,
and non-condensable gases from the
steam system while preventing or
minimizing the passing of live steam
into the condensate system. Steam is
generated at the boilers using
treated water and is sent to
different areas in the plant that
needs heat.
One of the users of steam in the plant are the heating
units. During winter time, the
HVAC system on the roof are in full
swing to warm the cold outside air
for indoor air comfort. If any of
the steam traps are not working,
condensate can back up inside the
HVAC tubes and the required heat
will not be achieved. It's a domino
effect. If indoor air quality is not
achieved, productivity is affected.
Steam traps are like loyal servants.
They are usually tucked in the corner doing their job day in
and day out. However, nothing lasts forever.

Over
time, the mechanical components inside
the trap wear out or corrosion in the
piping can block the orifice inside the
trap and prevent it from cycling. You
will end up with a failed open or a
failed closed trap, both of which will
cost you money, frustration, time, and
energy. A non-operating trap could also
have an adverse effect in the process. |

What is a Steam Trap Survey?
A
steam trap survey includes diagnostics of every stream trap
in the plant to check their condition. They could be healthy
and cycling properly, blowing through, motorboating, sized
incorrectly, or failed closed. Machine healthcare technician
uses structure-borne ultrasound and infrared to check their
condition. Reporting, which includes costing and trap
location, can be customized for simplicity and
repair-readiness.
