Time to Check Your Steam Traps

It's getting colder. Soon we will be
peaking on the heat demand in the
plant as higher delta T is needed
for buildings, heat tracers, and
anywhere that heat is required. If
you are using steam for heat
transfer, then you have steam traps
to look at.
|
What is a Steam Trap?
A steam trap is an automatic valve
used to remove CO2, air, condensate,
and non-condensable gases from the
steam system while preventing or
minimizing the passing of live steam
into the condensate system. Steam is
generated at the boilers using
treated water and is sent to
different areas in the plant that
needs heat. During winter time, the
HVAC system on the roof are in full
swing to warm the cold outside air
for indoor air comfort. If any of
the steam traps are not working,
condensate can back up inside the
HVAC tubes and the required heat
will not be achieved. It's a domino
effect. If indoor air quality is not
achieved, productivity is affected.
Steam traps are like loyal servants.
They are usually tucked in the corner
doing their job day in and day out.
However, nothing lasts forever. Over
time, the mechanical components inside
the trap wear out or corrosion in the
piping can block the orifice inside the
trap and prevent it from cycling. You
will end up with a failed open or a
failed closed trap, both of which will
cost you money, frustration, time, and
energy. A non-operating trap could also
have an adverse effect in the process.
Now is a good time to do a complete
Steam Trap Survey to make sure your
steam system is winterized and ready. If
you have an in-house personnel who can
do this, get him/her do the survey. If
none, then get us to do the survey. We'd
be happy to do it. We use both infrared
and ultrasound to evaluate their
condition.
By acting on it, the steam system in
your plant will be winter ready and you
won't have to worry about it.
